Understanding Guardianship 17A

Guardianship Matters

Clarity, care, and connection for every guardian

Congratulations! Your child is turning 18. While birthdays creep up on you and life moves quickly, don’t forget what it means when your child reaches this major milestone. Your child is legally becoming an adult. This transition comes with many changes, but above all, the law will now see your child as an adult—and you will no longer be his or her legal guardian.

Understanding 17-A Guardianship, and how it relates to you and your child, is integral. 17-A guardianship provides a legal framework for a parent who wants to establish long-term security for their child. It allows you to remain involved in your child’s life when it comes to medical and financial decisions. Obtaining guardianship can also create long-term security through the appointment of successor guardians who can continue supporting your child in the future.

The more support a person needs in their daily life, the more likely guardianship will be approved. That said, guardianship is not a one-size-fits-all solution. For individuals who demonstrate some level of independence, less restrictive options—such as powers of attorney, health care proxies, or supported decision-making—can offer meaningful protection without removing as many personal rights.
